Applicant Qualifications and Application Process

Thank you for your interest in the UAMS Regional Centers Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Washington Regional! All applications are reviewed in a holistic manner, as we believe that no single factor determines your future success as a physician. If you are currently in the first year of a 4+ year residency, you may apply for a PGY1 position.

Our program will ONLY accept applications through ResidencyCAS. We will not accept application materials submitted via email, mail, or fax.

The complete application package consists of the following items:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Common Application Form
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Dean’s Letter
  • At least one Standardized Letter Of Evaluation (SLOE). Two SLOEs are preferred.
  • Personal Statement
  • USMLE Step 1/COMLEX Level 1 Score
  • USMLE Step 2/COMLEX Level 2 Score if Step/Level 1 was Pass/Fail
  • ECFMG certificate (if an international medical graduate)

Please note that USMLE Step 2/COMLEX 2 must be completed and posted on ERAS by February 1 in order for a candidate to be ranked.

We will accept applications for six PGY-1 positions. Applications should be completed by September 24, and we will invite applicants for interviews on a rolling basis.

Please carefully review the following items:

  • This residency program sponsors J-1 visas. For information on other non-immigrant visa types, or if you have questions, visit the UAMS Immigration Services page, or contact UAMS Immigration Services at AskImmigration@uams.edu.
  • Applicants must be proficient in English (written, spoken-conversational/medical).
  • Applicants must meet the requirements for an Arkansas license which include the successful completion of all USMLE or COMLEX in no more than three attempts per step.
  • Applicant’s graduation should be within the last five years from a medical school accredited by the LCME or AOA. Consideration may be given to applicants who graduated more than five years ago, provided that you can demonstrate substantial professional growth and development.
  • Per ACGME requirements, international graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate OR hold a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Arkansas.
  • International applicants should not have any failing scores on USMLE Step 1 or Step 2.
  • International applicants should have clinical experience in the United States that included responsibility for patient care and follow up. Volunteer activities, observership, and research do not satisfy this requirement.

The Emergency Medicine residency program does not discriminate with regard to gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, veteran status, familial status, pregnancy, or sexual orientation.

Interviews and Second Looks

  • Applicants selected for interviews will be notified via email.
  • All interviews take place virtually, through the Thalamus GME platform.
  • During the interview, applicants will learn more about our program and meet our faculty.

We understand that while the virtual interview format does lower costs for applicants, it does not provide you with the opportunity to see Washington Regional or experience Fayetteville, Arkansas. Applicants who wish to meet us in person and tour the hospital may attend a second look visit in February.

  • Second look visits are NOT required – this is your opportunity to meet us and have more information available to you as you make your rank order list.
  • All second looks are completed AFTER we have completed our rank order list.
  • Second look visits do not affect how we rank applicants.
