Applicant Qualifications

Thank you for your interest in the UAMS / Washington Regional Internal Medicine Residency Program! We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and review applications in a holistic manner. We encourage applicants with diverse backgrounds and non-linear educational pathways to inquire and apply.

Please carefully review the following items:

  • This residency program does not sponsor H-1B or J-1 visa status. For information on other non-immigrant visa types, or if you have questions, visit the UAMS Immigration Services page, or contact UAMS Immigration Services at AskImmigration@uams.edu.
  • Applicant must meet the requirements for an Arkansas license which include the successful completion of all USMLE or COMLEX in no more than three attempts per step.
  • Applicant must be proficient in English (written, spoken—conversational/medical).
  • Applicant must be able to reside continuously in the U.S. for the entire length of residency training.
  • Applicant’s graduation must be within the last five years from a medical school accredited by the LCME or AOA.

  • All UAMS residents and fellows must to adhere to policies as outlined by UAMS and partner training sites as part of any ACGME-accredited residency training. Failure to adhere to such policies, including policies regarding vaccinations, may impact a trainee’s ability to successfully complete a training program. Requests for accommodation or exemption are available at UAMS, and requests for accommodation or exemption from such requirements may be available at partner facilities, but are solely at the discretion of those facilities and not UAMS.

The Northwest Arkansas Internal Medicine Residency Program participates exclusively with the NRMP and ERAS. All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Interviews are scheduled by invitation only from October through January. Residency positions are filled through the NRMP match. This training program selects the best qualified candidates and will not discriminate with regard to gender, race, age, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, veteran status, marital status, familial status, pregnancy, or sexual orientation.

Submission Material

  1. ERAS Common Application Form
  2. Curriculum Vitae
  3. Dean’s Letter
  4. A minimum of three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  5. In addition, Internal Medicine Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) is strongly recommended; however, if not offered through your school, it will not prevent review and consideration of your application
  6. Personal Statement
  7. Photograph (ID to track applicants after interviews)
  8. Official Medical School Transcripts
    • Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or
    • Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) or
    • Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada and meeting one of the following ACGME additional qualifications:
      • Holds a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to appointment; or
      • Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or
      • Has graduated from a medical school outside the United States and has completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school within the last five years.
    • USMLE Step 1 and 2 CK transcripts OR COMLEX Level 1 and 2 CE transcripts from Osteopathic Medical School Graduates. Our program requires the successful passage of USMLE Step 1 OR COMLEX Level 1 at the time of your application and passage of the USMLE Step 2 CK OR COMLEX Level 2 by the time our rank order list opens for entry on Jan. 30. There is no minimum USMLE or COMLEX scores for admission as this is only one of many criteria utilized in our selection process. We do not believe that a test score reflects the quality of a physician.

Review and Interviews

Upon careful review of all applications, our Residency Selection Committee extends offers for interviews. The Selection Committee will also be responsible for the final ranking of candidates.

  • Interviews take place October through January.
  • Initial interview invitations will start on Friday, October 3, 2025, and continue to release on a rolling cycle on Tuesdays and Fridays after 3:00 pm EST per Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine guidelines.
  • Applications must be completed by November 1 to be considered for review by the Selection Committee.
  • Signaling in ERAS: While we preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we also consider applicants who do not signal us.

Campus Visits

We will host second looks every Friday in February.  Our rank list will be submitted the first week in February to allow for unbiased second looks.  Applicants may join us for noon conference then take a tour of the facilities.  For more information and to register for a visit, please contact Leslie Jordan, Program Coordinator, at LLJordan@UAMS.edu.  Please note: These visits will not be taken into account in the selection of applicants into our program.
