Curriculum
Our program’s academic year uses a 13-block schedule of 2- or 4-week rotations designed to give residents ample time to develop their skills in the inpatient and outpatient settings and see a diverse array of patients.
As residents progress through the program, they build on their knowledge, are able to manage higher patient volumes and higher-acuity patients, and move into supervisory roles as they prepare for their post-residency careers.
The first year begins with internal medicine, to give residents a solid foundation in hospital medicine. Neurology residents rotate on hospitalist teaching teams with the UAMS Regional Centers Internal Medicine Residency Program at Washington Regional.
Residents are introduced to Neurology Continuity Clinic towards the end of their first year. Continuity Clinic is scheduled for 1/2 day per week, except when residents are completing Child Neurology rotations at Arkansas Children’s Northwest in Springdale.
Rotations below occur at Washington Regional Medical Center, unless otherwise stated. All required rotations are in Fayetteville and Springdale, Arkansas. There are no geographically distant required rotations in this program.

Conferences
Residents have protected time at noon for didactics. These sessions may be interdisciplinary or interprofessional and include all subspecialties related to neurology. Didactic sessions can include research curriculum, Stroke & Vascular Conference, Neurology Case Conference, UAMS Neurology Grand Rounds, one-on-one mentorship meetings with faculty, and simulation training. Journal Club is held monthly. A hot lunch is provided in the GME Suite at Washington Regional.
Interspersed with these sessions are a series of personal and professional improvement topics that include financial management, career development, and wellness.
Simulation training may occur in the hospital’s adjacent simulation center, in situ in the patient care areas, or a few minutes away at the UAMS Northwest Regional Campus in Fayetteville.
